Plastering and Skimming Services in Edinburgh
We repair damaged plaster, skim suitable surfaces and prepare walls and ceilings for a clean, high-quality painted or decorated finish.
Uneven walls, damaged plaster, visible cracks and poor previous repairs can remain noticeable even after several coats of paint.
Skimming creates a fresh finishing surface across suitable walls or ceilings. Local plaster repairs can restore damaged areas before decorating and improve the appearance of the completed paintwork.
We assess the existing substrate first and recommend the work required rather than automatically applying the same solution to every surface.
- Wall skimming
- Ceiling skimming
- Local plaster repairs
- Repairing suitable cracks and holes
- Restoring damaged sections
- Preparing plasterboard joints
- Improving uneven surfaces
- Repairing areas left after fixtures are removed
- Preparation before painting
- Combined plastering and decorating projects
A finishing coat can be applied over suitable existing walls to create a flatter, more consistent surface ready for decoration.
Suitable ceilings can be skimmed to improve tired, uneven or previously repaired surfaces.
Damaged or missing sections of plaster can often be repaired without replastering the entire room.
We assess suitable cracks, holes and damaged fixing points before completing the appropriate local repair.
Joints, fixings and repaired plasterboard areas can be prepared and finished before painting.
Wallpaper removal can reveal loose plaster, adhesive damage and uneven previous repairs. We can assess the exposed walls and recommend filling, local repair or full skimming.
Skimming may be suitable where:
- Walls are visibly uneven
- Previous repairs remain noticeable
- Plaster is worn or locally damaged
- Wallpaper removal has exposed inconsistent surfaces
- A ceiling requires a smoother appearance
- Older coatings have left a poor decorating base
- Renovation work requires a consistent finish
- Multiple local repairs would remain visible after painting
The correct solution depends on the stability and condition of the existing surface. In some cases, careful filling and sanding may be sufficient; in others, skimming a complete wall or ceiling will produce a better result.
Plastering and painting should be planned as connected stages of the same project.
Because Capital Painters & Decorators can complete both, we consider how the new plaster will dry, how it should be sealed and prepared, and what coatings will be applied afterwards.
You can request plastering as a standalone service or combine it with:
- Interior painting and decorating
- Wallpaper removal
- Surface preparation
- Ceiling painting
- Full-room refurbishment
- Woodwork and finishing
We inspect the walls or ceilings and identify cracks, loose material, previous repairs and other visible defects.
The existing surface is prepared to create a suitable base. This may include removing loose material and applying appropriate preparation or bonding products.
We complete the agreed local repairs or apply a finishing skim across the suitable surface.
The plaster is allowed to dry before it is inspected and prepared for decoration.
Where included in the quotation, the new plaster is prepared and the agreed painting and decorating work is completed.
Every property is different, but the following guide provides an indication of typical plastering & skimming costs.
Project
Typical price
Small local plaster repair
£150–£300
Skimming one wall
£250–£450
Skimming a small ceiling
£300–£550
Skimming the walls of one room
£800–£1,500
Walls and ceiling of a complete room
£1,200–£2,200
The final cost depends on the size of the area, the condition and stability of the existing substrate, access and the amount of preparation required.
Painting and decorating can be included within the same quotation or priced separately.
Please note: These prices assume that the existing surface provides an appropriate base. Loose plaster, extensive cracking, damaged plasterboard or additional repair work may affect the quotation.
We explain whether the area needs a small repair, complete skimming or a different preparation method.
The plastering work is completed with the intended painted or decorated finish in mind.
Preparation, plastering and painting can be managed as one organised project.
Floors, fixtures and surrounding areas are protected before plastering begins.
We keep the working area controlled and remove waste and materials when the project is completed.

We are so pleased with the work and will have them back in to do other work once we're ready in the future. It was a pleasure to have the team in, they're so lovely, always arrived on time and left the place in great condition. We were kept well informed of everything that was going on each day and they even patched an unrelated hole in another room for us. The attention to detail along the woodwork and covings (which were not included in the work, they were only working on the walls) makes such a difference to the finish.
